This workshop looks at the nuts and bolts of how to finance an independent film, including examples of actual films and their deal structure, as well as various financing sources and what drives the financing of a film. Common financing instruments such as Gap, Supergap, Minimum Guarantees, Pre-Sales, etc. are explained. We also explore the ways to structure a deal when sourcing financing from a single or multiple parties, the role of foreign sales companies and estimates, and the legal documents involved in film financing." — Tricia van Klaveren The Los Angeles chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its popular education & networking events at the junction of film & finance with a one-of-a-kind Film Financing Workshop for Southern California''s community of filmmakers, entrepreneurs and financiers. Following the sold-out success of her previous Workshop in Los Angeles, this intensive, hands-on learning experience brings expert film financier, producer and attorney Tricia van Klaveren (bio) back for more! It forms an integral part of IIFF''s unrivaled series of in-depth seminars featuring such luminaries as Hollywood film financing legend Lew Horwitz (April ''08 San Francisco Workshop), IFP founder Sandra Schulberg (April ''08 Los Angeles Workshop | February ''08 San Francisco Workshop & February ''08 Los Angeles Workshop | January ''08 Los Angeles Workshop), and Silicon Valley venture capitalist Dr. Frank Greene (July ''08 San Francisco Workshop | June ''08 Los Angeles Workshop | June ''08 Silicon Valley Workshop | May ''08 Los Angeles Workshop | March ''08 San Francisco Workshop & March ''08 Los Angeles Workshop). Tricia van Klaveren''s "Nuts & Bolts of Indie Film Finance" builds on the exceptional popularity of IIFF''s monthly Townhall Meetings —originally launched in the S.F. Bay Area during the spring of 2005— and features a highly topical program taught by a expert instructor with a distinguished track record of success. Our goal with this and future events is not only to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film, but also to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals. Over the past years, the landscape of film financing has changed considerably and continues to be in flux. The ongoing democratization of the means of film production has loosed an avalanche of competition in independent film, making it more difficult for even the most talented filmmakers to stand out. On the other hand, film is attracting a wider range of financing sources than ever, including a large and diverse group of private equity investors (e.g., so-called angels). In this environment of change, many of the old rules no longer apply. While content remains king, it is more critical than ever that filmmakers take a proactive, methodical and business-savvy approach to getting their films funded – be they fictional narratives or nonfiction documentaries, features or shorts, or experimental work. To thrive on the challenges ahead, filmmakers need to transform themselves from creative masterminds and technical mavens into holistic film entrepreneurs who navigate the waters of business and finance as competently and confidently as they tackle the creative and technical side of movie production. (After all, the complex and wonderful process of filmmaking starts and ends with the money.) Similarly, film investors and financial intermediaries such as bankers, attorneys, executive producers, etc. are well advised to not only take a close look at (notoriously hard to evaluate) screenplays, talent attachments, and production budgets, but also familiarize themselves with a wide and ever-changing array of financing sources, incentives and strategies in order to find the right fit for each and every project. Without a well thought-out financing plan, even the most promising film venture can easily turn into a protracted odyssey and may ultimately be doomed to fail (or, at least, fail to live up to its full potential). Moreover, the right set of financing strategies is an essential component of any viable film business plan – a film entrepreneur''s systematic road map for success and the single most important document any serious film investor needs to see, evaluate, and understand. As filmmaker or financier, or if you are just curious about film finance, ask yourself the following questions: Are you familiar with all financing instruments currently available for independent films? Do you know the pros & cons of different types of financing (e.g., Supergap, Pre-Sales)? Can you determine the right financial instrument for your film & when to form it? Do you know how to structure a financing deal that involves multiple types of financing? Can you list sources of indie financing (e.g., equity funds) & name the key players? What are the most effective ways to locate, approach & work with funding sources? Do you understand the legal requirements & optimal setup for various financing options? IIFF cordially invites you to get answers to these and other key questions at a hands-on Film Financing Workshop with accomplished film financier, producer and attorney Tricia van Klaveren (bio). Our seasoned instructor has successfully funded numerous independent films of various budget sizes and genres through her own production company and as an executive at an international film sales and financing company. Her deep insights are not simply based on anecdotal evidence or varying personal experience, but on the thorough and comprehensive analysis of a widely respected expert. What is more, the lessons conveyed are specifically relevant to the financing of independent films, as opposed to studio pictures where different principles may apply. Who should participate? Established and aspiring filmmakers looking to raise capital for their independent films, production companies, movie slates, film funds, or other film-related ventures are well advised to attend this high-value yet low-cost intensive seminar. Entrepreneurs, technologists, attorneys, bankers, investment managers, venture capitalists, and other go-getters with an interest in the film business will also find the Workshop useful & worthwhile. Are you considering taking an active role in film or expanding your current involvement? Don''t miss this opportunity to gain crucial insights from a highly accomplished industry professional with a track record of success in independent film financing – and connect with like-minded peers (and potential collaborators) in the process! ^top | abstract | instructor | venue | schedule | program | bios | registration | help Featured Instructor: This Workshop will be expertly taught by Tricia van Klaveren (bio), a seasoned film financier, executive producer, producer, former international film sales and financing executive, and attorney by training.
